Yesterday was another grand adventure to an amazing place.
If you have not been to Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge - may I suggest you head that way. Just north of Albany.
At first it doesn't seem so enthralling and then you hit the Rail Trail and you come into this gorgeous marsh where their are ducks, herons, raptors, and the best thing of all - these crazy frogs that are just going nuts with sound. It was marvelous.
I did the first loop where at the end of the rail I turned right and walked along the mowed trail and it brings you back to the gravel road and the parking area. I walked the rail a second time and went left at the end. This brings you to another marsy area, more frogs, birds, snakes, butterflies, dragonflies, and the wild sound of the those frogs just croaking away.
For the first time I wished I had my good camera equipment with me, as I saw a bird I had never seen before. A yellow headed blabird. Not all that common in the northwest, though are found in these protected marshy areas.
By walking the trail twice was able to get in a little more than three and a half miles. It is so worth it and something kids would like too. The rail trail is just fun. You are walking over water most of the way. Water skippers and all kinds of bugs. Including mosquitos so take some repellent.
I also visited the Jackson-Frazier Wetland in Corvallis. Another lovely boarded walkway through a small wetland area. Not as much to see here on this day, but I will go back again. I think this would be better done early morning or later evening. At just under 1 mile round trip, it is another great place for kids to enjoy seeing little fish, bugs, and birds.
An update on miles - I'm doing a great job of keeping the overall average at 4 miles a day. My goal for June.
June totals to date:
Miles move: 51.78
Calories burned: 8381
